It states "the larger smaller of a 30-60-90 triangle is 8." I think that "the larger smaller" was a typo - what was it intended to mean?

The problems should say "the smaller side of a $20-60-90$ triangle". It should be fixed now. As this assignment is past due, the question will not be graded.
